![]() ![]() There are 22 floating mountains in the Valley of Mo'ara that peak at about 130 feet high. The newest land in the park, Pandora - The World of Avatar, immerses guests in the majestic landscape of the alien world depicted in James Cameron's 2009 film. Lucky's last appearance in the park was July 28, 2005, after which he was shipped to Hong Kong Disneyland.ġ8. Lucky could interact with guests and do things like giggle, burp, snort and cough. The 9-foot-tall, 12-foot-long, 450-pound dinosaur walked freely through the streets of Dinoland. Back on May 5, 2005, as part of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Disneyland, Animal Kingdom introduced Lucky the Dinosaur, Disney's first free-moving Audio-Animatronic figure. It's a gradual introduction to a world that eventually leads guests to the breathtaking Tree of Life, which is the only Disney parks icon not depicting some type of building, but a form of nature.ġ7. The front section of the park, the Oasis, gives guests a taste of wonder with its exotic plants and small animals. Animal Kingdom is the only Disney theme park where its icon - the Tree of Life - isn't visible from the main entrance. This gave it the appropriate bumpiness needed to duplicate a remote African road.ġ6. When the concrete was wet, they rolled tires through it, and tossed stones, dirt and twigs on top. Imagineers first matched the color of the concrete to be used with the surrounding soil so it would blend in perfectly. The rutted road in Kilimanjaro Safaris looks that way by design. 1, 2001, by the lavish Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade, which ran until May 31, 2014, making it the longest running daily daytime parade in Walt Disney World history.ġ5. It premiered when the park opened and lasted a little over a year. The first was the March of the ARTimals, a cavalcade featuring performers in artsy animal costumes. Over two decades, Animal Kingdom has only had two. Over the years, several of Walt Disney World's theme parks have put on parades as part of their entertainment. In the lion's den, for example, they employ climate-controlled, temperature-regulating rocks (heated in the winter, air-conditioned in the summer) for the big cats to rest on.ġ4. ![]() Imagineers figured out a way to orchestrate their movements so that the animals would be visible from the open-air safari vehicles by concealing water and food sources like salt licks and feeders within the tree stumps, rocks and reed beds. In California, Walt feared real animals would hide from view. The three structures are independent - they don't touch - yet work together like a puzzle.ġ3. The third element contains the ride system, flexible enough to withstand mighty forces and dynamic movements. The mountain is part of the second structure that also supports all of the attraction facilities, show elements and lighting. The 25-foot-tall Yeti inside was so large and powerful it needed its own separate structure and platform. When you ride Expedition Everest, you're actually experiencing three attractions in one. ![]() It took 10 artists and three Imagineers working full time over 18 months to create the 325 animal carvings in the trunk and roots of the tree which is made, not out of wood, but concrete.ġ2. It can even withstand hurricane-force winds. They're made of thermoplastic polymer and individually attached to 8,000 branches that sway in the wind thanks to giant expansion joints. It's covered with more than 100,000 five-shades-of-green leaves - each over a foot long. The 145-foot-tall man-made baobab tree was built over a retrofitted 14-story oil rig. Animal Kingdom's iconic Tree of Life symbolizes nature and life, but it's neither natural nor alive. In its place stands a mythical land of a different nature: Pandora - The World of Avatar, stocked with fictional beings such as the flying Banshees.ġ1. A dedication plaque at the park entrance reads, "Welcome to a kingdom of animals … real, ancient, and imagined." Initial plans called for an area that was to be dubbed Mythia or Beastly Kingdom, and it would contain fictional creatures like unicorns and dragons. And that's before more rocks were brought in to build Pandora - The World of Avatar, which opened last year.ġ0. That's twice the volume of rockwork in the Mount Rushmore sculptures. To create this animal-friendly environment, 500 workers used a million square feet of imported rockwork to create the landscape before opening day. Animal Kingdom sits on what once was a huge, barren flatland of nothing but miles and miles of sand dunes. They've been conditioned audibly so that each species responds to a sound designated just for them, such as a cowbell for zebras and a coach's whistle for giraffes.ĩ. Getting them into their enclosures is easier than you might think. At night, after the park closes, the animals retreat to shelters for security and care purposes.
